The Iowa Douglases

Spent the morning touring the Brucemore Mansion in Cedar Rapids. Learned much about how George's son George Bruce Douglas and his wife Irene and their three daughters lived.

Not much about old George himself or his wife Margaret Boyd except for two sets of paintings of each of them. Unfortunately the room where the younger paintings were was too dark to turn out. The paintings of them when they were somewhat older appear below. This is the only picture I have ever seen of her.

George Douglas 1816 - 1884

Margaret (Boyd) Douglas 1825 - 1901

The five family pictures below were taken from displays in the visitor center.

George Bruce Douglas 1859 - 1923

Irene (Hazeltine) Douglas 1871 - 1937

Margaret (Douglas) Hall 1898 - 1971

Ellen (Douglas) William 1905 - 1984

Barbara (Douglas) 1908 -

Barbara still lives in Cedar Rapids.

NOTE:
I found out that the writer in the family was Ellen, not Barbara. The book by Barbara Douglas mentioned in yesterday's page is not by our Barbara Douglas. This information ahs been corrected as follows:
Ellen Douglas has written three books under the pen name Ellen Williamson. Her book 'When We Went First Class' was published by the Iowa State University  Press. It is about her young life experiences and the family travels during the 20s, 30s and 40s.

Found the Douglas Family Crypt at the Oak Hill Cemetery.
Erected in 1885 in memory of George.

Visited the Genealogy Society to find out who is in the vault:
